Building a Pre-Market Routine That Keeps You Prepared

RoutinePre-MarketTrade DayJuly 28, 2026

Why Pre-Market Preparation Matters

Reactive trading — sitting at your screen, waiting for something to move, then chasing — is one of the most reliable ways to lose money. The antidote is a structured pre-market routine that gives you a plan before the opening bell. When you know your key levels, your watchlist, and the macro backdrop before 9:30, you make better decisions under pressure.

This routine takes about 20–30 minutes. Do it every day, at the same time, before the market opens.

Step 1: Check the Overnight Futures

Before anything else, look at where US equity futures are trading. ES (S&P 500), NQ (Nasdaq), and YM (Dow) give you an immediate feel for market sentiment. Are futures up or down significantly? Is there a major gap setting up?

Also check: crude oil (CL), gold (GC), and the US dollar index (DXY). A strong DXY with falling oil and gold often signals a risk-off morning.

Step 2: Scan Overnight News

You need to know what happened while you slept. Focus on:

Step 3: Check the Economic Calendar

Know every scheduled event for the day before the market opens. High-impact events — CPI, PPI, FOMC decisions, Non-Farm Payrolls, unemployment claims — can cause violent intraday moves that stop you out if you are not prepared for them.

For high-impact releases: either stay flat going into the number, or understand that you are holding through a binary event. Scaling down size before a major release is almost always the right call.

Step 4: Mark Your Key Levels

On your charts, mark:

Step 5: Build Your Watchlist and Write Your Plan

Identify 3–5 stocks or setups you want to watch. For each, write down: why it is interesting, the trigger, your entry price range, your stop loss location, and your target.

The written plan is not optional. If you do not write it down, it is not a plan — it is a hope. Writing forces precision and keeps you from improvising under pressure.

The Zharks Pre-Market section in the Trade Day tab is designed for exactly this: record your checklist, key levels, watchlist, and notes before each session. Over time, reviewing your pre-market notes becomes your most valuable trading journal.
